🏠 1. Getting the Basics Set Up

Getting the practical things done early makes everything else much smoother. Here is what to tackle in your first few weeks.

Utilities — Jacksonville (Duval County)

  • Electric, Water & Sewer: JEA (Jacksonville Electric Authority) serves most of Jacksonville. Set up service at jea.com or call 904-665-6000.

  • Natural Gas: Peoples Gas serves many Jacksonville addresses. Visit peoplesgas.com to check service and set up an account.

  • Internet: Major providers in the area include Comcast Xfinity, AT&T, Earthlink, T-Mobile, and Brightspeed. Availability varies by address.

Utilities — Saint Augustine & St. Johns County

Utility providers vary by address. Water and sewer may be handled by St. Johns County Utility Services (sjcfl.us), the City of Saint Augustine, or a local HOA provider. Confirm your specific provider for your address before you move in.

  • Electric: Florida Power & Light (FPL) at fpl.com serves much of St. Johns County. Some areas are served by Clay Electric.

Driver’s License & Vehicle Registration

Florida law requires new residents to obtain a Florida driver’s license and register their vehicle within 30 days of establishing residency. Visit any Florida DHSMV (Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles) office — find locations at flhsmv.gov. Bring your out-of-state license, proof of identity, proof of Florida residency (two documents), and your Social Security number.

Voter Registration

If you are a U.S. citizen, you can register to vote online at registertovoteflorida.gov. Duval County elections are managed by the Duval County Supervisor of Elections (duvalelections.com). St. Johns County elections are managed at votesjc.com.

Homestead Exemption

If this is your primary residence, you may qualify for Florida’s Homestead Exemption, which can reduce your property taxes significantly. Apply through your county Property Appraiser’s office. Apply as soon as you take ownership.

Florida Has No State Income Tax

One of the best things about living in Florida: there is no state income tax. You will still pay federal taxes and local property taxes, but your paycheck goes further here than in most other states.

🚗 5. Getting Around

Jacksonville is the largest city by land area in the contiguous United States — it is genuinely large. Once you understand the main corridors, it becomes much easier to navigate. Most residents drive, and planning your commute around traffic patterns makes a big difference.

Key Roads & Highways

  • I-95: The main north-south spine through Jacksonville, running from the Georgia border south through the city and toward Daytona Beach and Miami.

  • I-295 (The Beltway): Loops around Jacksonville and connects many residential and commercial corridors, including the Southside, Orange Park, and the Northside.

  • I-10: The main east-west highway running through Jacksonville’s west side, connecting to Tallahassee and beyond.

  • J. Turner Butler Blvd (JTB / SR-202): The key road connecting the Southside to Jacksonville Beach, Atlantic Beach, and Neptune Beach.

  • SR-9B: Connects I-95 on the Southside to St. Johns County — an important route for commuters living in the rapidly growing St. Johns area.

  • US-1: Runs through Saint Augustine and St. Johns County, connecting towns and communities along the coast.

  • A1A (First Coast Highway): The scenic coastal route connecting Jacksonville Beach, Ponte Vedra Beach, Vilano Beach, and Saint Augustine Beach. Take it at least once — it is beautiful.

  • First Coast Expressway (SR-23): A newer toll road connecting Clay County and the Southside, useful for commuters in the western suburbs.

Public Transportation

  • JTA (Jacksonville Transportation Authority): Operates bus service across Jacksonville, the Skyway downtown elevated transit, and First Coast Flyer BRT routes. jtafla.com

Think in Neighborhoods and Corridors

Because the city is so large, most Jacksonville residents think of their daily life in terms of their neighborhood or corridor — Southside, Mandarin, San Marco, Riverside/Avondale, Baymeadows, Deerwood, Fleming Island, Nocatee, Ponte Vedra, World Golf Village, or Saint Augustine. Where you live will largely shape where you shop, eat, and socialize.

🌤 6. Weather & Hurricane Preparedness

Florida weather is one of the great joys of living here — and also something every newcomer needs to understand and respect.

What to Expect

  • Summers (June–September): Hot, humid, and frequently rainy. Afternoon thunderstorms are not uncommon. Temperatures regularly reach the 90s °F (33–35°C). The humidity can feel intense if you are new to it.

  • Fall (October–November): One of the best times of year. Temperatures drop, humidity falls, and the weather is beautiful. Hurricane season officially runs through November 30.

  • Winter (December–February): Mild by most standards. Average highs in the 60s °F (15–20°C). Occasional cold snaps can bring overnight lows near freezing, but snow is extremely rare.

  • Spring (March–May): Warm, pleasant, and increasingly popular as visitors discover the area. A wonderful time to explore outdoors before summer heat builds.

Hurricane Season (June 1 – November 30)

This is the single most important weather fact for any new Florida resident. Hurricane season runs from June 1 through November 30. Northeast Florida is not as frequently hit as South Florida, but direct impacts and tropical storm conditions do occur.

  • Sign up for your county’s emergency alerts: Duval County at www.jaxready.com, St. Johns County at sjcfl.us

  • Know your evacuation zone. Zones are assigned by county and are posted on county emergency management websites. Your zone determines whether you will be asked to evacuate for a major storm.

  • Build a hurricane supply kit: water (1 gallon per person per day for at least 7 days), non-perishable food, medications, flashlights, batteries, a portable charger, important documents, and cash.

  • Know where your nearest shelter is. Shelters are announced before storms by county emergency management.

  • If you are renting, your landlord may be responsible for the structure but your belongings are not covered by their insurance. Consider renter’s insurance.

💡 Download the FEMA app and your county’s emergency management app before hurricane season. Do not wait until a storm is approaching to prepare — supplies sell out quickly.

🏖 7. Beaches, Parks & Outdoor Life

One of the biggest perks of living in Northeast Florida is the access to beaches, rivers, parks, and natural spaces. The region has beautiful ocean beaches, barrier islands, state parks, tidal rivers, and miles of trails — all easy to reach and mostly free or inexpensive to enjoy.

For full descriptions, insider tips, seasonal advice, and a complete guide to every beach, park, and outdoor destination in the area, see the Explore Jacksonville guide on NamasteJAX.

One resident-specific note: if you live in the Nocatee community in St. Johns County, the community has an extensive trail network and kayak launches built into the master plan — a lovely way to get outdoors right from your neighborhood.
